I am happy to teach my children the proper way of washing their hands to avoid COVID-19.

Bola*, 28, and her son Khalid*, 5, wash their hands as part of a COVID-19 prevention initiative

To contain the spread of COVID-19 in Somalia, Save the Children is working closely with the government and other partners to raise public awareness and provide WASH services to health centres and communities in need.

In Puntland, twenty- eight-year-old Bola*, mother of six children is showing her five-year-old son Khalid*, proper way of washing hands with soap as she was shown by a health worker. This is part of to one of health facilities supported by Save the Children with the support of Germany’s Federal Foreign Office (FFO) Nexus program.

She says:
"We are worried. We hear about COVID-19 in the news but we don't know how protect ourselves and our children. At least now, I have some information. I am happy to teach my children the proper way of washing their hands to avoid the disease.

" I am also worried about my children, my parents and other people in my community. For example, if we are told to stay at home we don't have food to eat and feed our children. I work during the day, I do casual jobs like washing clothes, or cleaning house of people. I cannot afford to stay at home.”

Save the Children WASH and health team in Somalia launched public awareness raising campaigns across Somalia to inform communities on the basic prevention steps to slow down and prevent the spread of COVID. Germany’s Federal Foreign Office (FFO) Nexus program is supporting WASH, Health and Nutrition programmes in Galkayo, Mudug and other parts of Somalia. The programme supports distribution of hygiene kits and IEC materials with key messages. The program also provides clean water to health and nutrition facilities and child friendly spaces to ensure that children and their families have access to clean water in settlements that.

Save the Children has trained Ministry of Health Staff in 133 health facilities in Puntland who are currently undertaking public awareness campaigns to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in Puntland. The project is supported by Germany’s Federal Foreign Office (FFO) Nexus program.

Ali*, a nurse at one of the health facilities supported by Save the Children is training community members on maintaining good health and Nutrition for themselves and their children in times of COVID-19.
