SAVE THE CHILDREN STATEMENT ON THE APPROVAL OF CHILD RIGHTS

16th August 2023 - Save the Children Somalia extends its congratulations to the cabinet members of the Federal Government of Somalia for approving the Children's Rights Act, a significant step towards protecting children's rights in Somalia.

The bill, known as the "Sharciga Xaquuqda Soomaaliyeed," aligns with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), which Somalia ratified in 2015. It serves as the foundation for protecting children's rights in Somalia, affirming Somali children’s rights to survival, education, and protection.

MOHAMUD MOHAMED HASSAN, COUNTRY DIRECTOR, SAVE THE CHILDREN SOMALIA PROGRAM:

"The bill's approval signifies a pivotal juncture for children's rights in Somalia. We applaud the Somali government for achieving this remarkable milestone in advancing children's rights. The endorsement of the Children’s Rights Bill meets the national legislative requirements for children.

"Save the Children Somalia has been supporting the Somali Government throughout the process of developing the Children’s Rights bill over the past few years. We are committed to continue collaborating with the FGS cabinet, the parliament, and the Somali children to protect and advance children's rights in Somalia. Every child in Somalia deserves the right to survive, learn, and be protected.

Prior to the approval of the child rights act, the cabinet also approved the “Disability Act”, another important bill which protects the rights of people with disability including children. This is another great milestone for the people of Somalia.
