To most children in Puntland, speaking directly to a leader is nothing but a dream. The norm is for them to be brought into a room, entertain the leaders and listen to endless speeches from one leader to another. However for Mahad Nur and his friends  this dream became a reality when they met with the Vice President of Puntland to present their key concerns, discuss their future and their role in the society.

Heavy Gu’ rains displace thousands of people in Belet Weyne and in surrounding riverine villages

I did not know what to expect when I boarded a World Food Program (WFP) humanitarian helicopter to Belet Weyne in Hiran region of Somalia. For the first, helicopters are not the usual mode of transport to the region but today this is the only way that can get me to Belet Weyne following the recent riverine and flash floods that hit central and southern regions of Somalia in early May.

Floods in Belet Weyne, Somalia

Following the heavy Gu’ rains this year, the river Shebelle burst its banks displacing thousands of people in Belet Weyne town and the surrounding riverine villages. The floodwaters inundated houses and crops causing destruction to power grids, farm fields and infrastructure.

 Monday 21st May 2017- A powerful tropical cyclone with winds in excess of 120 km/per hour and an entire year’s worth of rain in just a few days has left destruction and death in its wake in Somaliland, endangering the lives of thousands of children in the region.

ECHO Funded Food Assistance Program Restores Hope in Somaliland

Maryam Warsame is a mother of five Children, all boys aged between 2 to 7 years old. She lived with her husband, Ahmed Jama in Widhwidh village of Togdher region in Somaliland. The family used to run a small business that was their source of their income. Maryam was forced to flee from her home with her children due to abuse and conflicts by her husband.
